Wind surge pushes two German gas fired plants to the brink

November 30th, 2011

Statkraft AS may have to shut two gas fired power plants in northern Germany due to the region’s surging wind capacity, according to the energy group’s markets head.

The company is “checking whether it can keep” the Emden and Landesbergen units in Lower Saxony, Juergen Tzschoppe told the Financial Times Deutschland, according to Bloomberg.

The two units represent almost 1 GW of capacity, he said.

Northern Germany’s expanded wind capacity has cut the two plants’ annual operating hours from between 1000 and 2000 hours to a few hundred hours, according to the newspaper.

Tzschoppe had earlier told Reuters that the Emdem and Landesbergen plants would only be profitable to operate commercially if wholesale prices rise by 50-60 per cent for a sustained period of time.

Paired with actual bone, it acts as a scaffold for new bone to grow on and ultimately dissolves with no apparent ill effects.
