Canada’s appeals court overturns Trans Mountain crude pipeline approval

Canada’s Federal Court of Appeal on Aug. 30 declared the regulatory review of Kinder Morgan Inc.’s (KMI) Trans Mountain Pipeline Expansion impermissibly flawed, effectively halting work on the crude oil transportation project. The court based its decision on a failure to include project-related tanker traffic as part of its evaluation. It also cited KMI’s failure to consult with indigenous peoples.

CNRL to buy idle Joslyn oil sands project

Canadian Natural Resources Ltd. (CNRL), Calgary, has agreed to buy the suspended Joslyn oil sands mining project in Alberta from Total SA and its partners for $100 million in cash on closing and $25 million/year for 5 years.

Island Energy to end Hawaii refining business, sell assets

Island Energy Services LLC (IES), a subsidiary of One Rock Capital Partners LP, New York, has decided to cease refining operations at its 54,000-b/d Kapolei, Ha., refinery on the island of Oahu as part of a shift in its strategic focus, which will be dedicated instead to logistics and retail operations.

Total to shed Chinese polystyrene business

Total SA has agreed to sell its polystyrene business in China to Ineos AG subsidiary Ineos Styrosolution. The deal includes Total’s production plants in Ningbo, Zhejiang Province, and in Foshan, Guangdong Province, each with a polystyrene production capacity of 200,000 tonnes/year, Total said.
