US Justice Department charges third Alstom executive
May 3rd, 2013Alstom (Euronext: ALO) executive William Pomponi has become the third person charged in a US investigation into alleged bribery in Indonesia.
He joins fellow executives Frederic Pierucci and David Rotschild who have also been charged in connection with the affair.
The men stand accused of bribing government officials in Indonesia to help secure a contract as a power-services provider. So far, one of the defendants has pleaded guilty.
Mr. Pomponi was charged with violating and conspiring to violate the Foreign Corrupt Practices Act, which prohibits bribes to foreign officials to win business, as well as money laundering.
Fox Business reports that Mssrs. Pierucci and Pomponi are charged as co-defendants, while Mr. Rothschild was charged separately and pleaded guilty to conspiring to violate the FCPA.
Among the officials alleged to have been bribed are a member of the Indonesian Parliament and high-ranking members of Perusahaan Listrik Negara, a state-owned Indonesian electricity company, in order to secure a $118m contract to provide power-related services on the Tarahan project. The bribes were allegedly funneled through two consultants to hide the payments.
